Step 1: Obtain Certificate of Cause of Death ( CCOD)
1. Contact your family doctor who has been attending to the deceased or contact us to arrange for a doctor to visit your place.
2. If the family doctor is able to certify the death, he will issue the CCOD on the spot. If
not, the police will be called for the body to be sent the Centre for Forensic Medicine (CFM) at Blk 9 Singapore
General Hospital in a police hearse. The family will be informed when to go down to the CFM, usually the next
day.
At the CFM, the police investigator will arrange for the family to view and identify the body of
the deceased in the presence of the coroner.
The coroner will than review the case and determine if a autopsy is required. The family will than be informed of
the coroner's decision and the time to claim the body for the funeral.
The family should bring along the following to the CFM:
1. All medical documents relating to the deceased.
2. All medicine consumed by the deceased
3. Identification papers of the deceased such as NRIC/Passport/Birth Cert etc.

Step 2: Engage a Funeral Director
The funeral director will:
1) collect the body from the home/hospital
2) send the body for embalming
3) deliver the body to the location of the wake
Step 3: Register the Death (can be done together with step 2)
Prior to registering, the family should decide if the body is to be buried or cremated. This
information is needed when registering the death.
1) If the body is in a goverment restructured hospital, registration can be done at the
hospital. Speak to the ward nurse to find out where you can do the registration.
2) If the body is in a private hospital, the death can be registered at
a) the police divisional HQ or neighbourhood police centre or police post. Refer here for a list of location.
b) the registary of birth & deaths :

3) CFM Mortuary: death can be registered at the CFM Mortuary.
